Varkala Attractions
Beach
The Papanasam beach (also called as Varkala beach), which is ten kilometers away from Varkala, is renowned for the natural spring. The beach is a perfect spot for anyone who likes to escape from the noise and tensions of daily life. With swinging palms above and soft sands beneath, the beach ensure calm atmosphere.

Mineral Water Springs

The natural mineral spring at Varkala beach is considered to have medicinal and curative properties. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins; hence the name 'Papanasam beach'.

Anjengo Fort

Located at Anjengo, a coastal town in Varkala (12 km), this fort is one of the attractions of the region. Believed to be constructed in 17th century, the fort has its own historical importance. At present, the fort is under the protection of the National Heritage monuments.

Ponnumthuruthu (Golden Island)

Ponnumthuruthu, also known as Golden Island is 20 km from Varkala and is known for its Shiva Parvathi temple. This 100 years old temple is situated amidst thick coconut groves, which has grown over the entire stretch. Boats are available from Nedunganda, taking through the backwaters for about 30 minutes.

Thiruvambadi Beach

Located 1 km from Thiruvamdabi road, this beach is a stretch of black sand, just adjacent to the North cliff. Also known as Black Sand beach, it is an ideal spot for those seeking peace and solitude. The beach is relatively empty with coconut trees providing plenty of shade.

Sivagiri Mutt

The Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the great Hindu reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru (1856 - 1928) is also close by. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30th December to 1st January. Sree Narayana Guru propagated the ideology: "one caste, one religion and one god", in a society torn by the taboos of caste system.

Vishnu Temple

Located close to the Varkala Beach in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala is the beautiful Vishnu Temple. The temple is more than 2000 years old and the shrine of Lord Vishnu of Hindu religion is placed inside.

Janardhanaswamy Temple

A two thousand year old shrine the Janardhanaswamy Temple stands on the cliffs overlooking the beach, a short distance away. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Janardhanaswamy Temple is well known for Arattu festival which is celebrated every year in Meenam(March-April) for ten days.
